3/17/24 His Only Son ”Covenant”

We began a new series this month called HIS ONLY SON, as we continue into the Passion month of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ were going to be showing on April 3rd. 7pm the movie HIS ONLY SON.

Let’s continue on with this teaching of God’s Only Son, let’s look again at John 3:16-17

John 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:16–17 (NLT) 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

The Son or Jesus is the most precious gift that the Father gave to us. This is love, Not that we loved God but that He loves us.

God gave us His very best to show us all how special we are to Him. This is true love.

We saw last week in Matthew 3:16–17 how God describes His Son. “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Also at the Transfiguration God says something even more profound.

Matthew 17:1–8 (NKJV) 1

5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

{Other translation’s say, LISTEN TO HIM.}

Church family, The Father loves the Son and gave Him for us.

Look at what John the baptist said about the Son.

John 3:35–36 (NKJV) 35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.

36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Look at what Jesus said about the Father’s love for Him.

John 5:20–21 (NKJV) 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

21For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.

This love that the Father has for the Son, how much then does He have for us. WOW!!!

Now to understand the plan of redemption we need to understand covenant.

God establish a covenant with Noah, that He would never destroy the earth through a flood.

Genesis 9:11–13 (NKJV) 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

But there was a very special covenant that God set with a man and because of this covenant, I believe that Jesus came. This man is Abraham.

Remember, God is a covenant keeping God.

Abram’s CALLING:

Genesis 12:1–5 (NKJV) 1 Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you.

2I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

4So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

5Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.

Genesis 15:1–21 (NKJV) 1After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

2But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

3Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”

4And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.”

5Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

6And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

7Then He said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.”

8And he said, “Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?”

9So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

10Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.

11And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.

13Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.

14And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

15Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.

16But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

17And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.

18On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— 19 the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, 20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

We know that Sarah get’s discouraged and gives Hagar to Abram and she had a child and his name is Ishmael.

Genesis 16:1–2 (NKJV) 1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.

2So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

Hagar has a Ishmael by the word of and angel after Sarai kicked her out. Look at what the angel say’s to Hagar.

Genesis 16:9–12 (NKJV) 9The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.”

10Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.”

11And the Angel of the Lord said to her: “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction.

12He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”

Chapter 17 now comes the sign of the Covenant.

Genesis 17:1–7 (NKJV) 1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.

2And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”

3Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying:

4“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.

5No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

6I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.

7And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.

But here is what I want you to see today. When a covenant is seal, each person gives there all to the other, their best.

Genesis 21:1–7 (NKJV) 1And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken.

2For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

3And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac.

4Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

5Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

6And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.”

7She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”

His only son:

Genesis 22:1–19 (NKJV) 1Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

2Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

3So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

4Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.

5And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”

6So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.

7But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

8And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.

9Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

10And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

11But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”

12And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

13Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

14And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

15Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven,

16and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son—

17blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.

18In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

19So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

Because Abraham was willing to give this covenant child, His only Son, God gave us His only Son. And this is the story of Israel, God’s covenant people and today because of Jesus we also have a covenant with God.

Matthew 26:26–29 (NKJV) 26And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

27Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.

28For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

“STOP HERE”

Romans 8:35-39 (NKJV) 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (In other words, problem’s) 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing, let me say it again, Nothing can separate us from His all giving Love to us and it’s all because of His only begotten Son, Jesus.

Because of the Son, Jesus the Father wants to give us the entire Kingdom. WOW!

‌Luke 12:32 (NKJV) 32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

‌Think about it, look at what the Bible say’s that God has In Store for us who believe on the one and only begotten Son.

‌Galatians 3:26-29 (NKJV) 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Galatians 4:1–7 (NKJV) 1Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, 2but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father. 3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. 4But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Adoption: legal transfer from one family or situation into another family, used in the New Testament to describe believers relationship to God.

We are Heir of God, joint Heir’s with the only begotten Son.

Romans 8:14–19 (NKJV) 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

15For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

16The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

19For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Look at this amazing prayer by Paul led by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:14–21 (NKJV)

14For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

16that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,

17that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

18may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—

19to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

21to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Now go back to the encounter of Jesus with Nicodemus.

John 3:1–21 (NKJV)1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

This man Nicodemus is very interesting. He comes at night so no one especially the leader’s see’s that he is coming to Jesus.

He stick’s up for Jesus when other’s were against Him.

John 7:45–53 (NKJV) 45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?

48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?

49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,

51 “Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

52They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

53And everyone went to his own house.

He was also the one I believe at the crucifixion, and then helped with the burial of his lord Jesus Christ.

John 19:38–42 (NKJV): After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.

39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.

40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

42 So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?

11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.

12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

21But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
